Watchya doin' MySpace?
MySpace has decided to launch a new music service to compete against iTunes. Keep in mind that iTunes has surpassed both Best Buy and Wal-Mart to become the #1 music retailer in the United States.
MySpace has teamed up with all four majors (EMI, Sony BMG, Warner, Universal) and Amazon’s online music store (the #4 music retailer in the US) to allow MySpace users to stream full tracks and then give them the choice to purchase these tracks off of the Amazon online music store.
Really MySpace? Your contribution to the music industry is offering us a slightly improved pay-per-download service? I mean, it’s great that we can stream entire tracks from all four majors - but big deal. I can’t take those tracks home with me on my iPod, not to mention the fact that the majority of music I listen to doesn’t even come from the majors.
This is just another band-aid solution to a much larger problem that no one with any real power seems inclined to address yet.
There’s always another possibility - that this is just the first step in what MySpace hopes to grow into a much more comprehensive music service.
As for right now, I really can’t see the value to this service. It’s definitely a step in the right direction; but I was really expecting something much more impressive and forward thinking - especially if it intends to legitimately compete against iTunes.
Give me something worth paying for and I will.
